About Prenplants
Our History
Prenplants was established in 1987 in Guildford by Sylvia George where she was selling Alpines and Herbaceous perennials. It moved to its current home at Birch Copse in The Haven in 1989.
In 2002, peat-free trials were started in the nursery and a range of plants was offered peat-free. It was in 2011 when the nursery offered the whole range of plants grown in peat-free compost.
Current owners Ellen and Chris brought the nursery on 15th December 2014 and formed Prenplants Sussex Limited. In June 2015 Ellen joined the business full-time.
As the business started to grow in 2016, we invested in our potting area by buying a bale breaker which would help speed up potting on our machine and reduce the manual handling. We also started to replace the covers on some of our tunnels.
In 2017, we invested in a new forklift and also our first Luton van to enable us to be more flexible with our deliveries.
In 2019, we brought our second Luton van and also started renting space at our second site in Maplehurst, near Horsham. We also installed a new staff room providing a much bigger space for our increasing workforce.
In 2020, we decided to start work on our field but increasing our capacity with new beds. We did the groundwork and put in new beds 21-23. We also invested in our label printing system which has enabled us to bespoke print our plant picture labels.
In 2021, we finished our new beds in the back field installing beds 24-26. We also took on a second glass house at our second site. We bought a third van to increase our ability to deliver ourselves. We also invested in a new potting machine, bale breaker and automated potting table towards the end of the year to help increase our potting capacity.
2022 saw us take on our third and biggest glasshouse at our second site which has enabled us to increase our range of ferns.
