Hardy Geraniums

What makes hardy geraniums so good, is there is one for most situation in the garden. Know as “Cranesbill” there are lots of different varieties that can give months of colour and ground cover. They come in shades of blue, pink, white and can be compact low growing or large bushy varieties perfect for the middle of a border. We grow over 45 varieties of hardy geraniums and listed below are a few of our favorites.

1. Geranium Rozanne (Gerwat)

Always features in our top 5 most popular plants that we sell on the nursery. Winner of Plant of the century at Chelsea Flower show in 2013, this is a must for any border. It has lavender blue flowers that are saucer shaped with a white eye. Quite a compact variety which you can keep in check by triming after it has flowered.

2. Geranium Patricia

Very similar to psilostemon, but shorter, this hardy geranium has vivid cerise pink flowers with a maroon eye. This does well in the middle or towards the back of a border. Likes a sunny position and can offer a long period of nectar for bees and butterflies.

3. Geranium Phaeum Joseph Green

This beautiful double hardy geranium is the first double phaeum geranium. It has purple and green flower heads. It was found by Lynne Edwards who named it after her father who encouraged her love of plants.

4. Geranium sylvaticum Mayflower

A tall variety of hardy geranium that thrives in part shade. It has violet blue flowers with a white eye. Great for spring colour.

5. Geranium sanguinium

This compact low growing hardy geranium has vibrant magenta flowers. Known as bloody cranesbill, it is great in the front of a border or on a rockery, they can tolerate dry sunny positions.

There is a hardy geranium for every garden and they are easy to look after. Don’t be afraid to chop them back hard, when they have finished flowering as they will probably come back and flower again later in the summer.
