It is always really exciting to see the first seed of the year germinate. Last year it was Campanula, this year it was a joint winner with Cephalaria and Malva both making an appearance on the same day.
Our seeds are sown in peat free compost helping towards making us 100% peat free! Each variety of seed has its own special compost recipe. They certainly do not all like the same thing! Who knew seeds were so fussy?
We have a polytunnel filling up with newly sown seeds. This is a process that we do over the next few months. It can be a full time job getting them all sown.
You do have to get your eye in to start to see the tiny green shoots but it is so rewarding when you do. We spend the whole of January looking to see what will be the first seed to germinate but as it was chilly and then with that really cold snap it has taken until February to see our first seedling. It is amazing how quickly some of them do! I wonder what the next seed to germinate will be?
